Distinguishing Characteristics
   
The first segment of the endopod (E1) of the fourth leg is longer than it is wide with a convoluted inner edge  

The metasomal wings are triangular (MW).  The genital segement (GS) is rounded.

  The base of forked caudal rami (FR) has an extra growth.

  • Found in Old Durham Reservoir, Durham, New Hamphire
Similar Species
  • Acanthocyclops robustus is often confused for A. vernalis.  Three main distinctions are in the genital segement, endopite 1 of the fourth endopod, and the forked rami. The genital segement of A. robusutus is rounded.  On  A. robustus, the first segment of the endopod of the fourth leg is longer than it is wide with a convoluted inner edge.   Finally, at the base of caudal rami, A. robustus has an extra growth.
