Taxonomy
Phylum Rotifera
Class Monogononta
Order Ploima
Family Lecanidae

Taxonomic Note: In this key, Lecane and Monostyla are considered to be separate genera. However, many authors (e.g. Segers 1995) argue that Lecane and Monostyla should be combined as a single genus Lecane. For example, according to Ruttner-Kolisko (1974), species with fused toes were placed in the genus Monostyla. However, because of the intermediate forms they were included with Lecane (Edmondson, 1935). Many authors still regard Lecane and Monostyla as separate genera.
