Name derivation:

 

Morphology:

Broadly ovoid, 60 – 300 um long, covered with cilia.  One macronucleus and up to three micronuclei.  One or more contractile vacuoles that may have radiating canals..

Classification:

Pecinuline ciliates. Order Peniculida; Family Frontoniidae

Similar genera:

Paramecium

 

Importance:

Habitat:

Common in freshwater and marine plankton and benthos.
