Wolffia sp. red flower in dorsal pit of frond, Liz Pelonzi Pool, Lee, NH USA 29 July 2010
Floral pit with immature or mature flowers was present in ~ 5 - 10% of fronds. The floral pit is oval in this species, about 200 x 250 microns in area, and about 200 microns deep. I ncontrast to these red-pigmented flowers (pistil to the left, anther to the right), the flowers of W. australiana are reported to be colorless (Bernard, Bernard and Denny 1990w).
