Rhabdonema  Kützing  1844;  8 of 9 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Rhabdonematales;  Family Rhabdonemataceae

Morphology:

Reproduction:  The only oogamous pennate diatom.  In addition it has amoeboid non-motile sperm, rare among oogamous diatoms (Round et al.  1990).)
