Classification:

Opephora  Petit  1889;  15 of 27 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Fragilariales;  Family Fragilariaceae

 

Morphology:

Araphe unicell, slightly to moderately asymmetric in long axis of valve face, some species shaped like willow-leaf snowshoes.  Valve face has 7 – 30 uniseriate rows of ~5 large punctae separated by thick costae and arranged in 2 ranks separated by a thick pseudoraphe connected to the costae.
