Classification:

Bambusina brebissonii F.T. Kützing (1849); 4 out of 19 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2014).

Order Desmidiales;  Family Desmidiaceae

Morphology:

Bambusina has small, rectangular cells that end with star-like points. Cells have a slight central channel and are in a singular row.  Each cell has semicells, each with one chloroplast.  The nucleus is located in the center between semicell chloroplasts.  A pyrenoid (transparent structure) is visible between semicells.  Cells viewed from the tip (apex) appear circular with two to three protrusions or points near the joining of semicells (isthmus).

Both Bambusina and Desmidium, another filamentous desmid, contain semicells with one chloroplast.
