Classification:

Gloeococcus  A.Braun  1850;  8 of 9 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Tetrasporales; Family Palmellopsidaceae

 

Morphology:

Non-flagellated colonies are gelatinous and can be large (> 5m).  Biflagellate cells are relatively immobile within the gelatin, each with one cup-shaped or parietal chloroplast.

Habitat:

Freshwater or in soil.
