Name derivation:

Named after Jiri Komárek, phycologist from the Czech Republic.

 

Classification:

Komarekia  Fott  1981;  2 of 3 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry qand Guiry 2013).

Order Sphaeropleales;  Family Scenedesmaceae

 

Morphology:

Non-flagellated colonies of four cells in one plane, or tetrahedral with space between cells.  Cells oval, 3 – 8 µm long.  Cells retain a fragment of parental cell wall, and larger colonies comprised of the 4-cell groups may develop as a result of attachment to these fragments. No flagellated stage known.

 

Similar genera:

Crucigenia.

 

Habitat:

Plankton of eutrophic rivers, reported from Europe and Asia, temperate to tropical areas.
