Name derivation:

Radiococcus  Schmidle  1902;  2 of 14 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Sphaeropleales;  FamilyRadiococcaceae

 

Morphology:

Nonflagellated colonies, typically 16 cells, with a thick mucilaginous envelope, up to 250μm diameter.  Groups of 4 cells frequently occur, or cells may be arranged in rings or dispersed throughout matrix.  Cell wall fragments are often apparent, although they slowly dissolve.

Habitat:

Freshwater plankton, reported in North America and Europe, probably are widely distributed.
