Name derivation:

Named after Felix Eugene  Fritsch 1879-1954), well-known British phycologist, author of encyclopedic two-volume text Structure & Reproduction of the Algae (1935, reprinted several times).  He also collected algal sketches, continued after his death by J.W.G. Lund, later published as The Fritsch Collection of Illustrations of Freshwater Algae (Lund 1961) available in microfiche transparencies.

 

Classification:

Fritschiella  Iyengar  1932; one species is recognized (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Chaetophorales;  Family Chaetophoraceae

 

Morphology:

Branching green filaments with colorless rhizoids penetrating damp soil.  ‘Heterotrichous’ habit – has upright as well as horizontal branches.
