Leptosira  Borzě  1883;8 of 14 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and guiry 2013).

Order Chlorellales;  Family Leptosiraceae

Pleurastrum is conisered a synonym in Phycokey, as it species, demonstrated to be polyphyletic, are similar. Pleurastrum is primarily terrestrial, found on wet soil.

 

Morphology:

Short trichomes with short branches.  One chloroplast without a pyrenoid.  Asexual reproduction includes release of a small vesicle containing 20 – 60 zoospores (swarmers).

 

Similar genera:

Pleurastrum is morphologically similar but has a pyrenoid associated with its chloroplast per cell.  Leptosiropsis has a chloroplast with an encircling pyrenoid.

 

Habitat:

Freshwater epiphyte on other ‘algae’ such as Coleochaete.
