Classification:

Stigeocloniu  Kützing  1843;  35 of 69 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

 

Order Chaetophorales;   Family Chaetophoraceae

Thamniochaete F. Gay 1893 is not separated from Stigeoclonium in PhycoKey.

 

Morphology:

Attached green uniseriate branched filaments, prostrate and erect, end cells narrowed to a multicellular hair-like tip.  One parietal chloroplast and at least one pyrenoid per cell.

Quadriflagellate zoospores are produced during asexual reproduction.  Anisogamous gametes, bi- or quadriflagellate, are produed during sexual reproduction.

Highly polymorphic likely arising from growth conditions Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Habitat:

Freshwater, widespread and common in a variety of habitat and substrate types.
