Name derivation:

 

Classification:

Heterothrichopsis  Iyengar and Kanthamma  1941;  1 of 2 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Ulotrichales;  Family Ulotrichaceae

Morphology:

Short green unbranched filaments not more than 4 cells long.  Cells with up to 8 discoid chloroplasts, mostly 1-4.

Similar genera:

Stichococcus is morphologically similar but lacks pyrenoids.  Xanthonema (syn. Heterothrix) in the Tribophyceae is similar morphologically but lacks starch.

Habitat:

Soil.  There are just two records, one from India in a soil culture, and another from northeastern Pakistan (Zarina et al. 2005).
