Classification:

Rhizoclonium  Kutzing  1843;  30 of 73 species descriptions are currently recognized taxonomically.

Order Cladophorales;  Family Cladophoraceae.

Morphology:

Unbranched attached trichomes ~60 μm diameter.  Cells many times longer than wide.  reticulate chloroplasts.  Most reproduction is asexual by fragmentation;  occasionly by biflagellate zoospores.  Isomorphic life history wityh biflagellate gametes in at least two species.

Similar genera:

Chaetomorpha overlaps with Rhizoclonium.

Habitat:

Widespread in freshwater, brackish and marine habitats.  forms dense mats in salt marshes.
