Name derivation:

L. proto: first + mono: one + stroma: layer

i.e. primitive Monostroma

Previously part of the genus Monostroma

Classification:

Protomonostroma K.L.Vinogradova, 1969; There are 4 species of which 2 have been taxonomically accepted.

Order Ulotrichales;  Family Ulotrichaceae

Morphology:

Bright green and slippery thallus, with an undulate edge, formed by several leafy blades originating from a common holdfast. It reaches ~ 30 cm in length. Viewed at the surface, the cells appear as polygonal, 12–16 μm in diameter.

Habitat:

Marine habitats include the Gulf of Maine in New England, generally the NW Atlantic, and Europe.  Recently observed in Admiralty Bay, King George Island, Antarctica – a region with exaggerated temperature increase.
