Name derivation:

Green angular cell or green productive cell  Green Chloro- elongate or productive -gonium

 

Classification:

Mesostigma  Lauterborn  1894;  1 of 2 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Mesostigmatales; Family Mesostigmataceae

Morphology:

Biflagellate green unicells, flattened, with insertion of flagella in a pit near the apical end.  One chloroplast and an eyespot.  With or without pyrenoids (species dependent).  Both the plasma membrane and flagella are covered with at least one layer of organic scales, the outer layer being large enough to be seen with the light microscope.
