Classification:

Dicranochaete  Hieronymus  1890;  currently 4 of 5 species descriptions are accepted taxonomically (Guiry 2013).

Order Chaetopeltidales;  Family Chaetopeltidaceae

 

Morphology:

Mostly unicells with an operculum and bifurcate pseudopodium (Wiel and Reymond 1983).  Cells  are hemispherical in side view, 18 – 24 μm diameter, have one cup-shaped chloroplast, and are enclosed by a viscous gelatinous sheath.  Branched gelatinous setae ~35 μm  long arise from the base of the sheath.
