Classification:

Schroederia  Lemmermann  1898;  6 of 12 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Sphaeropleales;  Family Characiaceae

Morphology:

Fusiform or spindle shaped unicells that can be straight, curved, or helical, with spines at both ends.  Multiple chloroplasts when mature with pyrenoids.

 

Similar genera:

Reinschiella is not separated from Schroederia in PhycoKey.

 

Habitat:

Freshwater plankton and other habitats.  Widespread in temperate to tropical zones.
