Name derivation:

 

 

Classification:

Tetracystis  R.M.Brown, Jr and Bold  1964;  21 of 23 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Chlamydomonadales;  Family Chlorococcaceae

 

Morphology:

Unicells, spherical to oblong, 5.5-18 µm in diameter, with one lobed or stellate chloroplast and a pyrenoid with large starch grains.  Form 4 – 8 zoospores up to 12 µm long.

 

Similar genera:

Pseudotetracystis (Arneson 1973) is not separated from Tetracystis in PhycoKey.
