Classification:

Bitrichia Woloszynska, 1914;  6 of 9 described species are currently accepted (Guiry 2012)

OrderHibberdiales;  Family Stylococcaceae

 

Morphology:

Loricate unicell with two or three hollow pointed ‘horns’.  A centrally located pore in the lorica houses a sometimes branching rhizopodium that extends outward presumably to capture small particulate food (e.g. bacteria).

Habitat:

Freshwater lakes, widespread but rare.
