Classification:

Derepyxis  A. Stokes  1885;  7 of 10 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2014).

Order Hibberdiales;  Family Stylococcaceae

Morphology:

Unicell, flask-shaped, many times longer than are broad. Enclosed in a lorica, very thin sheath of silicon (Stokes 1888).

Similar genera:

 

Habitat:

Freshwater ponds, attached to other filamentous structures in small groups or individuals (Stokes 1888).

They are found in freshwater lakes and ponds, in North America, Africa, and recently in the Ukraine. There are not many species found in the genera, so they do not take up a large percentage of biomass where they are found (Kapustin  2015).
