Classification:

Tychonema  K. Anagnostidis & J. Komárek  1988;  7 of 10 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Order Oscillatoriales;  Family Microcoleaceae

Similar genera:

Oscillatoria has much more pigmentation (chlorophyll a and phycobilins).

Morphology:

Trichomes mainly solitary, straight or coiled.  Cells isodiametric or slightly longer or shorter than wide.  chromatic adaptation generally with more phycoerythrin than phycocyanin, giving a slight pink cast.

Habitat:

Freshwater plankton, tychoplankton or benthos.
