Name derivation:

Classification:

Distigma  Ehrenberg  1831;  11 of 38 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry).

Order Eutreptiales;  Family Astasiaceae

Morphology:

Colorless biflagellate unicells.  One flagellum is twice as long as the other.  In spite of Ehrenberg’s observation of two stigma (hence the genus name) Distigma has none.  Guiry (2013) suggests perhaps Ehrenberg may have seen two large Golgi bodies instead of stigmata.
