Classification:

Gyropaigne  Skuja  1939;  5 of 6 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Eutreptiales;  Family Astasiaceae

Morphology:

Colorless cylindrical cells with several keels in periplast, and one emergent flagellum.  Osmotrophic, with paramylon grains varying in shape.

Similar genera:

 

 

Habitat:

Freshwater acidic habitats with decaying vegetation.  Rare, recorded from Europe (France, Latvia, Switzerland, Ukraine).
