Classification:

Heteronema  Dujardin  1841;  50 of 68 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Euglenales; Family Peranemataceae

 

Morphology:

Colorless free-swimming unicell, with one or two emergent flagella.

Similar genera:

Paranema is cylindrical rather than flattened and has trailing flagellum closely oppressed to cell in a groove. (Leedale 1967).
