Classification:

Paranema  Dujardin  1841;  20 of 22 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

 

Order Euglenales; Family Peranemataceae

Morphology:

Colorless free-swimming unicell, cylindrical with two emergent flagella.

Similar genera:

Heteronema is flattened rather than cyindrical and has trailing flagellum free from the cell (Leedale 1967).
