Name derivation:

Classification:

Spongomonas  Stein  1878;  all 3 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Isochrysidales;  Family Derepyxidaceae

 

Morphology:

Colorless colony of flagellated spherical biflagellate cells embedded in mucilage (mucous, gel) containing orange or brown globules.  The entire colony may be sausage-like in shape.  Flagella differ slightly in length.
