Name derivation:

 

 

Classification:

Stylonema  Reinsch  1875;  13 of 19 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Morphology:

Branched uniseriate to multiseriate filament – trichome within a sheath.

Similar species:

 

 

Habitat:

Marine epiphyte on other ‘algae’ or seagrass, or epizoite on invertebrates.  Grows to depths of 540 m.  Widespread in temperate and tropical sites (Ibid.).
