Name derivation:

 

 

Classification:

Heterogloea  Pascher  1930;  1 of 4 species descriptions is currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 20132).

Order Heterogloeales;  Family Heterogloeaceae

Morphology:

Amorphous gelatinous colonies with globular cells 4-10 µm diameter.  Vegetative cells may be amoeboid within colony.  Zoospores have typical heterokontic flagella, different in length and presence or absence of mastigonemes.

 

Similar genera:

Gleoechloris may be synonymous (Bourelly) although chloroplast position, cell position, and shape of colony seem to merit separation of the genera (Guiry and Guiry 2013).
