Classification:

Xanthonema  P.C. Silva  1979;  14 of 17 species descriptioins are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Tribonematales;  Family Xanthonemataceae

Xanthonema replaces Heterothrix (Pascher 1932), which was established to replace Bumillaria exilis Klebs (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

 

Morphology:

Uniseriate unbranched filaments as long as several cm, pale or bright green.  Fragile, tending to break down into short cell chains.

Reproduces with zoospores and aplanospores.

 

Similar genera:

Tribonema has thinner areas of wall in mid-region of cell, and clearly visible H-pieces (Johnson 2011).

 

Habitat:

Terrestrial on wet soil, or in slightly acidic water.
