Members of the genus Synchaeta are very soft and highly pliable, providing an nearly amoeboid ability to change shapes. Individuals often contract when preserved, making identification on body shape difficult. Mouthparts are often used by taxonomists to identify organisms to species. We have provided two keys for Syncheata, one based on whole organism morphology and one based on mouthpart features.
