Name derivation:

Rhizoclonium: Gr. rhizo: root, root-like + clonium: a branch

 riparium- L. riparium: growing on river banks or belonging to the shore

Classification:

Rhizoclonium Kützing, 1843; There are 69 species of which 29 have been accepted taxinomically.

Order Cladophorales; Family Cladophoraceae

 

Morphology:

Composed of uniseriate primarily unbranched filaments that are pigmented plus occasional rhizoidal branches that are clear

Similar genera:

Chaetomorpha, with unbranched filaments and a single basal cell; Urospora an unbranched filament with basal rhizoids

Habitat:

Rhizoclonium riparium grow entangled on muddy surfaces within estuarine sites.
