Classification:

Chilomonas Ehrenberg  1831;  5 of 7 species descriptions are currwently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2014).

Order Cryptomonadales;  Family Campylomonadaceae

Morphology:

Biflagellate unicells.  Asymmetric "tear-drop" with a slight bend at the basal end. Two subapically-inserted flagella. Colorless.  Sack-like gullet lined with many rows of ejectisomes.  More detail at Guiry and Guiry.

Habitat:

Freshwater including temporary lakes and rivers.  Some species are reported in brackish and marine habitats, mainly reported from Europe.
