Name derivation

 

Classification:

Katodinium  Fott  1957;  24 of 65 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Gymnodiniales; Family Gymnodiniaceae

Synonym: Massartia Conrad 1926

Morphology:

Flagellated unicells, either colorless phagocytes or photosynthetic mixotrophs, with cingulum located near the basal end.  No heavy cellulose plates (unarmored).

Habitat:.

Freshwater, estuarine and marine plankton:  Ubiquitous.
