Staurastrum hirsutum apical or end view.

Photograph by Dave Eslinger who notes that he collected the sample with a 20 mm plankton net from a brackish tidal stream in Charleston, South Carolina, USA (32.794N , 80.192W), a location where a freshwater stream enters from an old historical rice field, now a wetland. Tributaries include waters from bottomland blackwater hardwood swamps with plenty of tannins. Other Staurastrum and Merismopedia cells were also present.
