Classification:

Gloeotila  Kützing  1843;  15 of 26 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Chlorellales  Family Chlorellaceae

 

Morphology:

Short fragile filaments, broken segments often retained in gelatinous matrix.

 

Similar genera:

Geminella is less fragile and has pyrenoids (John 2011).

 

Habitat:

Freshwater plankton, or attached, occasionally in soil (John 2011).
