- Although odonates in the larval stage are aquatic organisms, the adult forms are mainly terrestrial (much like many of the adult forms of other orders in this key). Although adult forms are often found near streams, they do not inhabit them as they did in their larval forms. For this reason, this key does not contain the key to families of adult odonates.
- There are slight differences to help identify adult dragonflies vs. adult damselflies:
- Dragonflies have stout bodies and at rest, the wings are held to the side of the body
- Damselflies have slender bodies and at rest, the wings are held above the body
