Classification:
Sphaeroeca Lauterborn 1894; 1 of 1 species descriptions is currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2014).
Morphology:
A colonial choanoflagellate
Similar genera:
Proterospongia and Astrosiga, along with Sphaerocaeca, have various stages in their life cycle so similar that there generic identity is in doubt (Leadbeater 2008).
Habitat:
Marine.
