Name derivation:
|
||||
"Little bell" -- Bell Kodon-
little -ella |
||||
Classification:
|
||||
Codonella Haeckel,
1873 Order
Tintinnida; Family Codonellidae At
least 18 species are recognized |
||||
Morphology:
|
||||
Unicells with a lorica rounded basally and flared outward at the apical
end. Composition
of the lorica is diverse, perhaps species
specific. Some are organic secretions
described as chitinous. Others have agglutinations of various
particles varying from calcareous scales from coccoliths,
to diatom frustules, or silicaceous chips. Apparently a sticky organic substrate is
secreted from the mouth, flows backward along the outside of the cell, picks
up various particles that become embedded, then
harden against the cell (Tappan and Loeblich 1968). |
