Name derivation:

 

Classification:

Eriophorum Linneaus;  at least 18 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically.

Order Cyperales;  Family Cyperaceae.

Monocot;  Perennial.

Morphology:

Up to 1 m tall.  Rhizomatous; leaves generally longer than stem.  Individual tussocks have 300-600 ‘tillers’, each with two or three narrow needle-like leaves sheathed at the base.

 

Similar genera:

 

Habitat:

Northern Hemisphere – widely distributed in arctic, sub-arctic and boreal to temperate zones.  Often dominant in tundra ecosystems.

Bogs and other acidic wetlands.  Forms tussocks.
