Common name:  ‘duck weed’

Classification:

Lemna Linnaeus

Order Arales;  Family Araceae (AGP II System), formerly Lemnaceae

Monocot

Morphology:

Thallus < 5 mm long with a single root.  Produces perfect flowers with two anthers and one style within a pouch on the upper (aerial) surface for aerial pollinations.

Reproduction mainly asexual by budding.  Rapid colonization of new habitats.

Habitat:

Free floating on freshwater habitats protected from strong wind – marshes, ditches, ponds and small lakes.

Perceived ‘overgrowth’ of Lemna can be mitigated by grass carp, where they can be introduced legally.
