Originally classified as colorless Oscillatoria

Leptothrix Kützing, 1843;  only 1 of 112 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Oscillatoriales;  Family Oscillatoriaceae

Morphology:

Sheathed filamentous bacterium capable of oxidizing iron and manganese, usually has a dense coating of iron-colored precipitate in sheath.

Habitat:

Various freshwater saprobic (high dissolved organic material with chelated iron and manganese) habitats.
