Nauplius larvae (Copepods etc.) |
Nauplius larva from Casco Bay off Falmouth, Maine USA 31 Oct 2011 The naupliar stage is common to most crustaceans, is planktonic, and undergoes metmorphosis into a variety of species-specific planktonic or benthic adults. Propulsion is achieved using antennae (appendages associated with the head). During metamorphosis more appendages appear associated with the developing thorax, that take on the role of propulsion. The nauplius is the first developmental stage from the fertilized meiotic (sexual) egg, the zygote. |
