Microscopic Art as applied here is the result of patient, tedious construction of microscopic images from microscopic particles.  Diatom frustules and butterly wing scales, the most commonly used particles, are carefully arranged with a fine needle onto a glass microscope slide (and fixed in position with a mounting medium), while observing the progress through the microscope.

Other types of microscopic art include the exacting micro-miniature 3D sculptures of Willard Wigan and more of his sculptures. Photomicrography in general as well as specifically images of the microscopic organisms can also be included as microscopic art.
