Name derivation:

Tetracyclus  Ralfs 1843;  17 of 25 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Tabellariales;  Family Tabellariaceae

 

Morphology:

  Zig-zag colonies of araphes are heavily silicified and contain transapical ribs visible in valve view.  Some species are capitates, others capitate.

Similar genera:

 Tabellaria also forms zig-zag colonies and is considered a close relative of Tetracyclus.
