Name derivation:

 

Classification:

Denticula Kützing, 1844

Order Bacillariales;  Family Bacillariaceae;  20 of 137 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry 2013)

 

Morphology:

Symmetric biraphe unicells with raphe along margin of valve, not visible in light microscopes so it appears to be an araphe frustules.  Has prominent costae (thickened bars at right angles to long axis.

 

Similar genera:

Nitzschia, especially some species with similar rahe and chlolroplast morphology.

Habitat:

Freshwater, especially streams and rivers.
