Cosmocladium  Brébisson  1856;  7 of 11 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2014).

 

Order Desmidiales; Family Desmidiaceae

Morphology:

Colonies or pseudofilaments of smooth-walled cells with a deep isthmus at overlap of two hemicell walls, attached by microfilaments that halfway between adjacent cells form a visible attachment.  Microfilaments are secreted from pores in the cell walls.  May also have a watery sheath also secreted from cell wall pores.

Habitat:

Freshwater, oligotrophic and acidic habitats.
