Hyalotheca  Ehrenberg ex Ralfs  1848;  11 of 59 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry qand Guiry 2014).

Order Desmidiales;  Family Desmidiaceae

Morphology:

Cells are cylindrical and appear in single rows connected by the widest end of each cell.  Some species’ cells have a narrow central channel.  A few species have slight protrusions at the semicell base-either two at each end of the cell or three protrusions evenly spread around the cell.  Each cell has two chloroplasts with a pyrenoid (transparent structure).  The nucleus is found in the center of the cell between chloroplasts.  The smooth cell wall has several lines of side-by-side pores.
