Phymatodocis  Nordstedt  1878;  3 of 17 species descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2013).

Order Desmidiales; Family Desmidiaceae

Morphology:

Filaments of variable length.  Cells are square to rectangle in side view with a deep isthmus (constriction).  Placoderm desmid (two overlapping wall halves).

 

Similar genera:

Other filamentous placoderm desmids have a slightly to moderately different cell shape in side view.

Habitat:

Tropical bogs or somewhat acidic and oligotrophis lakes, plankton, rare.  One species extends as far north as boreal Canada.
